Beginner's Guide On How To Do Routine Maintenance To Your Vehicle

by Cherly Fowler

If you had just purchased your first vehicle, whether brand new or a used model, you will want to take the time to care for it properly so it gives you several years of service. Doing routine maintenance will prolong its life and make it run efficiently. Here are some steps you should take every month or two to ensure your vehicle stays in tip-top shape.

Check All Fluids And Replace If Necessary

Your vehicle has several fluids to help it run properly. Gas, oil, transmission fluid, brake line fluid, windshield washing fluid, and water in the radiator should all be checked routinely to make sure they are at a comfortable level for vehicle operation. If you notice any of your fluids are leaking from the bottom of your vehicle, make an appointment with an auto mechanic to make necessary repairs. Your vehicle will have gauges on your dashboard to notify you when reservoirs are low. Do not put off adding the appropriate liquids as this could cause your vehicle to run rough or stop altogether.

Take A Look At Tires For The Best Performance

The tires on your car will need to be maintained regularly. Check the side walls of your tires to find out the recommended air pressure of each one. If the information is not listed on the sides of your tires, take a look in your vehicle manual for the recommendation. This air pressure should be maintained at all times. With routine driving, the pressure may lower a bit, making it necessary to check it with a tire gauge if the tires appear low. Add air to the recommended pressure if necessary. Do not over-inflate your tires as this could cause a blowout when driving.

It is important to bring your vehicle to an auto mechanic to have your tires rotated according to the manufacturer's recommendation. This will keep your tires from wearing prematurely and will help keep your vehicle from pulling to one side if they are wearing unevenly.

Tend To Mechanical Elements When Wear Is Noticed

Take a look under the hood periodically to make sure all wires and belts remain intact. If any have jagged or ripped portions upon them, they may need to be replaced. If you notice any corrosion on your battery terminals, your mechanic can clean this and put in a new battery if necessary.

Anytime you hear a sound under your hood or within the mechanics of your vehicle, it is a good idea to bring your vehicle to an auto mechanic promptly. The transmission, engine, or brake system may be in need of assistance. Failing to bring in your vehicle right away could lead to the deterioration of these systems, causing the need for extensive repair as a result.
