3 Components Of Your Brakes That May Need Replacement

by Cherly Fowler

The braking system of your vehicle is one that is highly important to take care of. When you receive regular inspections and provide maintenance for the brakes, you can be sure that you are able to slow and come to a complete stop in time. It's important to have your brakes inspected at every oil change or every 10,000 miles. When you have an inspection, there is a chance that you may need certain parts of your braking system replaced due to wear and tear. Here are three components that may need replacing:

The Brake Pads

The brake pads are the most common component of the braking system to have replaced. This is because the brake pads become worn easily since they have direct contact with the braking mechanism when you need to come to a complete stop or slow down. Having the brake pads replaced is something that is unavoidable and will need to be done regularly to prevent major problems from coming up in future.

The Rotors

Although it's possible for the rotors to rust over time, which leads to them having to be replaced, the most common reason people need to replace them is because they waited too long to replace their brake pads. When you don't replace the brake pads and they become completely worn, the metal of the rotors is exposed and comes into contact with the metal from the braking mechanism. This causes extreme wear on the metal that leads to the rotors needing to be replaced. You may need to have the rotors replaced if you hear a high squealing sound when you step on the brakes. This is often the sound of metal to metal contact.

The Calipers

The calipers are what helps stop the vehicle by pressing onto both sides of the wheel to allow it to slow or stop. If the calipers have a leak, they will need to be replaced. Whenever you need to replace one caliper, it's a good idea to replace the other one on the opposite side to ensure even breaking. You will know that the calipers probably need replacing if you brake to one side.

When you know what three components of the braking system may possibly need replacing at some point, you can know what to be prepared for. You will also better understand why your mechanic needs to replace these components in order to ensure you are driving safely on the road.
